Which Disney Hero Are You?

You are part Buzz Lightyear. You’re flashy and you like attention, but luckily your friends are not similarly vain. You often get carried away with yourself, but you can count on your friends to give you a reality check. You make an unrivalled counterpart as a two man team, so when the going gets tough, don’t be afraid to let your best friend help.
You are part Beast. You are ugly on the outside but those who know you well have learned that underneath your exterior is a marvelous prince. Your warmth and patience are your greatest qualities and they have helped you make loyal friends. Protect your friends well because they will soon repay you in full.

Computer Freak If you’re an Internet addict, you would know what a social networking site is. Websites like Friendster, Facebook, MySpace and the like. There are even websites catering to a particular group to assist them network, make friends and keep i contact. As for me, you can see in my side bar how many I have. It can be addictive, especially Facebook, don’t you think so? But despite all this, there is one thing I’m sure you would not be too pleased of. Forwarded messages/chain letters. It is like receiving them via email isn’t enough!

Here’s one which I received in my inbox on Friendster. Take note that I don’t mind the intention, just the wording and the recipient:-

What I fear has materialised…

You should know that for the past few - read three - days, I expressed my concerns to my friend. Yes, it has something to do with Standing My Ground. :-(

Before that, you may not know this: before October 2007, my blog was hosted at Blogger.com. In fact, at the time, this was the only blog hosting site I know of! After all, most of my friends’ blogs were something-something.blogspot.com. You should know that despites its popularity, Blogger lack a few built-in features. Needless to say I conducted a search and evaluated the available blog hosting sites online. I wanted a free, easy-to-use blog with more features than mere templates. And finally, I found WordPress.com (take note that there is also a WordPress.org).

You may be surprised, but I can’t recall the name of my blog before Standing My Ground. What I can tell you is this: I was listening to Stand My Ground by Within Temptations at the time. I was also going through a lot of stuff back then. In fact I wrote about it.

While WordPress.com may have some shortcomings, over all, I give it an eight out of 10. You really should get your hands on the features. One, notably, being the Stats page. This page enables me to keep track of the number of visitors, search engine terms which led to Standing My Ground, referrals by other websites or blogs, the posts which has the highest amount of traffic and the websites on my blog which visitors clicked on. This feature comes in a 1 day, 1 week, 1 month and whole life compilations.

I better not forget the emoticons. :-) and :-p (beat that, blogger! lol)

Here’s the thing: On the 25/3/2008, my blog received 27 hits. This is relatively normal for me. In fact, double digits below 40 was the reasonable target. The next day, much to both my pleasure and fear, the number of visitors rose to 82 hits. This figure rose to 110 visitors on the 27/3/2008. Like the stock market, it fell again to 82 before dipping to 29 (as of writing). Oikh… But in total,I broke the 2000 visitors mark earlier today.

What I confide in my friend was this: I’m more worried about sustaining a stable flow of visitors above all else. The influx is just out of the roof! I dread to see the graph after a few days… While I did mention that a bad habit among bloggers is looking at the statistics, I should stop the habit. lol.

Once again, thank you for visiting my blog. Your feedback would be appreciated. :-D

When Brotherhoods and Groups are Hijacked..

10. (1)Subject to Clauses (2), (3) and (4) -

(a) every citizen has the right to freedom of speech and expression;
(b) all citizens have the right to assemble peaceably and without arms;
(c) all citizens have the right to form associations.

Article 10(1), Federal Constitution
Like many other democracies, [the Federation of] Malaysia protects your right and freedom to associate and form associations. You can apply to join Chambers of Commerce, Welfare and Charity groups, political groups, think tanks and the like. As a student, you can for study and discussion groups with no problem. It can be at McDonald’s, Secret Recipe, the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaves, Perpustakaan Tun Abdul Razak, Perpustakaan Sultan Badlishah, Kolej Perindu, Dataran Cendikia and at other venues. You can also associate yourself with like-minded people and go out and do the things you like: camping with friends at Pulau Perhentian, going shopping at Bukit Bintang, swimming in Ulu Yam and the like. All covered and protected by Article 10. What saddens me is when sororities, fraternities and groups are hijacked by reckless individuals who intend to promote their own personal cause rather than the objective of the group as a whole.

You Must Always BE Relevant.

In a fast moving world, you must always be relevant!

If you’ve read Sen. Omar Faudzar’s comment to the New Straits Times, you would know what I am talking about. The topic of this article is: Veteran Umno leader urges drastic changes in party to remain relevant. His message should be heeded not only by UMNO but by everyone in Malaysia. For once, let us move away from political discussions and focus on the survival of the fittest in the globalised and fast-moving world.

For those of you who are still debating whether globalisation is good or bad, let me offer this quote for you to consider:

Complaining about globalization is as pointless as trying to turn back the tide. There are, I notice, no such debates in China. They are not worried about potential threats but are busy seizing the opportunities in ways that are transforming their society and ours as well. - Tony Blair “Europe is Falling Behind”,  Newsweek Special Edition December 05-February 06, p. 22.

The question now, are you seizing the opportunities that are coming your way? Or are you running away from the real issues?

Many are lamenting over the death of the New Economic Policy. With due respect, I believe that it stopped in 1991. After all these years, have you not learn from the policies of Mahathir? How he showed to us and to the world that we are able to stand on our two feet? Why do you need the luxury of an electronic and automated wheelchair with two nurses when you are able bodied? Think about it: how have the New Economic Policy helped you?

The talks of special privileges of the Malays and natives of Sarawak and Sabah are worrying. I like to remind my friends in UiTM, Malacca rose without the help of special privileges. Parameswara, Tun Perak, Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah did not need Article 153. Yet they brought the Malacca sultanate to greater heights. What was once a small fishing village led by a Sumatran prince being hunted by the Siamese and Majahpahit Empires became a regional powerhouse. China and Inda traded with Malacca, remember? So did the Arabs. The fall of Malacca was not due to technological advancement of the Portuguese. To me, that assumption is crap. Why did Malacca fall? Remember who was the Bendahara after Tun Perak? Remember who opposed the new Bendahara and why? The local nobles and aristocrats opposed Sultan Mahmud’s decision to appoint Tun Mutakhir. Why? Because he was India Muslim - not Malay. That’s why Malacca fell, not because of the absence of Article 153.

Not convinced? Let’s take the spread of British influence into Perak. Remember your Form 2 History?How did Perak fell? Was it because the British Empire’s army? Come to think about it, in the 19th Century, the British Empire became the largest empire in the world! Are you saying Britannia, who has this large armada and empire, is incapable of taking over Perak by war? Again, how did the British came into the picture? Civil unrest. The Ghee Hin and the Hai San were fighting for dominance of tin mining. But that alone is insufficient. What was the key ingredient? Does Raja Yusuf, Sultan Jaafar Mua’azzam Shah, Raja Ali and Raja Ismail ring any bell? What was the coveted prize? The throne of Perak. I don’t think the British Empire just came in uninvited. Some from the inside opened the door.

Get the message yet?

In today’s world, we have something known as knowledge-based economy. The problem with this ever-growing  economy is that knowledge must be relearned every 2nd year. What you learn today will be obsolete in two years time, contend Robert T. Kiyosaki. Before March 8th, 2008, we all thought the Barisan Nasional would retain 2/3 majority. Is that premise true now? The good news is with the Information Revolution, acquisition and dissemination of knowledge is free and fast.

For those who are studying and son graduating, remember: in the past, your competition were fellow graduates. Today, many jobs cease to exist and are being replaced by technology. As good as it is, another global wave of enormous magnitude is the tide of technology. Can you harness the power of technology? Or are you swimming against it?

As a nation, we are facing a global tsunami. As time pass, it’s coming closer to our shores. What are we going to do about this? How will we rid/face this?

Habeamus Menteri Besar!

The Terengganu Menteri Besar Crisis has been resolved! YAB Datuk Ahmad Said has been confirmed by the UMNO Supreme Council as the legitimate Menteri Besar in Terengganu. In the past week, Malaysia saw a two corner fight between the Palace of Terengganu and UMNO. The palace appointed a relatively unknown Assemblyman to replace former Menteri Besar Idris Jusoh. This was a rare move. The first was last week in Perlis. Before this, no Ruler has ever bypassed the Prime Min.. I mean, the choice of President of UMNO.
